Full moon day during Ashadha month is known as Guru Purnima day. Traditionally this day is reserved for Guru Puja or Guru Worship. On this day disciples offer Puja or pay respect to their Gurus. Guru refers to spiritual guide who enlighten disciples by his knowledge and teachings.

Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima and this day is commemorated as birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa. Veda Vyasa was the author as well as a character in the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

Adi Shankara, Sri Ramanuja Acharya and Sri Madhvacharya are some of the noteworthy Gurus in Hinduism.

Guru Purnima is also celebrated by Buddhists in the honor of Gautama Buddha to commemorate the day when Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India.

ଫଗୁ ଦଶମୀ (Phagu Dashami)

Phagu Dashami is the first day of Dolyatra festival in Odisha. It is observed on Phalgun Shukla Dashami, the tenth day in bright half of Falgun masa(month). Phagu Dasami 2011 date is 15 March 2011. On this day, idols or images of Radha and Lord Krishna are placed on a swing as part of Basantotsav. It also marks the beginning of 5-day Holi festival in Odisha.
The major highlight of Phagu Dashami festival and Dolyatra is the smearing Lord Krishna and Radha idols with gulal and abhir. On Phagu Purnima or Phalgun Purnima, Holi festival is celebrated. The day after Holi festival is celebrated as Vasantotsav in some places of Odisha and Bengal.

Chandrabhaga Buda/Mela


Magha Saptami, popularly known as the ''Chandrabhaga Buda'', is the second largest festival in Odisha, next to the famous car festival.The pilgrims, most of whom had spent the night on the beach, took holy dip and welcomed the rising Sun with prayers when it surfaced from the ocean on the ''Agni Kona''(the south east corner of the horizon)


Magha Shukla Saptami, or Magha Saptami, is an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Surya, the sun god in Hinduism. In 2011, the date of Magh Saptami is February 10. It is observed on the seventh day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) of Magh Month (January – February). The most important ritual on the day is taking a holy dip (bathing ritual) on sunrise. The famous Chandrabhaga fair is held on the day at Konark in Odisha.
Thousands of devotees take a holy bath at the Chandrabhaga Tirtha near the Konark Sun Temple on Magha Shukla Saptami. Several thousands of devotees also take a holy dip at the near by sea.
The day is also observed as Ratha Saptami and is a major event in Tirupati Balaji Temple and in many parts of South India. Magh Saptami is also known as Surya Jayanti.

Samba Dashami(ଶାମ୍ବ ଦଶମୀ)

Samba Dashami Brata, also known as Surya Puja, is observed on the 10th day in Shukla Paksha in Pausha masha(Month).
Legends or Samba Dasami vrat katha say that Samba, the son of Lord Sri Krishna, was affected by leprosy. He performed a severe penance for Surya Bhagwan and was cured. On this day, mothers perform Surya Puja to please Surya Bhagawan and to keep their children healthy.

Makar Sankranti


Today(14-Jan-2017) is Makar Sankranti 
"Meethe gud main mil gaya til,

Makar Sankranti festival holds special significance in India. It is one of the important Hindu festivals, celebrated with pomp and gaiety across the length and breadth of the country by observing different rituals. The festival marks the commencement of Sun's journey to the northern hemisphere, thereby making the days warmer and longer than the nights. In other words, Sankranti marks the culmination of winter season and beginning of harvest or spring season. All over India, Makar Sankranti is observed with great fanfare.

Note :- Makara Sankranti/Makara Mela -It falls on January 14th of English Calender .The Sun makes his outset towards North Pole & this movement of the sun from this day is called "Uttarayana Gati".
